Getting outdoors with the family is a great way to keep healthy and stay active, but also great fun, the Gruffalo Trails are the perfect way to spend an afternoon as a family, but did you know that some of the Foresty England places are currently offering a Zog Trail ?

The Zog activity trail can be found at 26 of the nation’s forests across England and with lots of fun activities to complete, the new self-led trail will encourage children to become superheroes of the forest themselves.

You can purchase a zog activity pack to take along with you, they cost £4 and include kraft bag to colour in, dragon wings to decorate and wear, Zog glasses, stickers, trail leaflet, pencil and crayon.

What is a Zog Trail ?

The interactive family trail features all sorts of facts and fun activities to teach you all the things that dragons need to know!

Don wings and try your hardest to complete the challenges to collect golden stars, as your little dragons find out how they can help care for the forest and how the forests can help care for them. Pop on the magic glasses and look out for hidden letters along the way to solve a word puzzle too.

When you get to the end, don’t forget to do the crayon rubbing to complete your certificate and get a selfie with Zog!

Alice Holt Zog Trail

Location : Bucks Horn Oak, Farnham, GU10 4LS

Zog trail at Alice Holt – This trail starts 2 minutes from Visitor Centre. Trail activity packs are available to purchase from the Visitor Centre during opening times and cost just £4.

The trail is 1.45km, the grade is classed as Easy, recommended age 3-9 years, but can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Accessibility : Suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, on level or gently sloping paths with one slight incline along the route.

Length of Time : The trail should keep the young ones entertained for around an hour leaving plenty of time to find more fun and explore the forest.

Accessibility : Hard forest tracks (walking into some of the areas will be forest floor) but all accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Cardinham Woods Zog Trail

Location : Cardinham Woods, Bodmin, PL30 4AL

Zog trail at Cardinham Woods – This 2.5km trail starts at the rangers hut you can purchase the activity pack for £4, the grade is classed as Easy, recommended age 3-9 years, but can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Accessibility : Mostly level surfaced trail, with one steep ascent towards the end. Suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Tramper available to hire.

Length of Time : The trail should keep the young ones entertained for around an hour and a half leaving plenty of time to find more fun and explore the forest.

Accessibility : The trail is surfaced with some undulation and two railway bridges.

Grizedale Forest Zog Trail

Location : Grizedale Forest, Hawkshead, LA22 0QJ

Zog trail at Grizedale – This 0.75 mile trail starts at the visitors centre, you can purchase the activity pack for £4, the grade is classed as Easy, recommended age 3-9 years, but can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Accessibility : Surfaced paths. Suitable for pushchairs but be aware there are some hilly sections on the route.

Length of Time : The trail should keep the young ones entertained for around an hour leaving plenty of time to find more fun and explore the forest.

Accessibility : Mostly level surfaced trail, with one steep ascent towards the end. Suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. This activity is suitable for off-road mobility scooters. There is seating along the trail if required.

This trail is aimed at families with children aged 3-9, but can be enjoyed by all.

Accessibility : Mostly level surfaced trail, suitable for pushchairs, wheelchairs and pedestrians. Note that the route is also used by dog walkers, horses and cycles.

Accessibilty : Majority level surfaced path, suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Some small sections are uneven forest terrain.

Length of Time : The trail should keep the young ones entertained for around an hour leaving plenty of time to find more fun and explore.

Jeskyns Zog Trail

Location : Henhurst Road, Cobham, Kent, DA12 3AN

Zog trail at Jeskyns – This 1 km trail starts 100m past the cafe, you can purchase the activity pack for £4, the grade is classed as Easy, recommended age 3-9 years, but can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Accessibility : Mostly hard surfaced, with a small grass section.

Length of Time : The trail should keep the young ones entertained for around an hour leaving plenty of time to find more fun and explore the forest.

What else is at Jeskyns Community Woodland : 5 walking trails, play areas, picnic areas, cafe (takeaway only), dog activity trail, horse trail.

Kielder Castle Zog Trail

Location : Kielder Castle, Kielder, NE48 1ER

Zog trail at Kielder Castle – This trail is 1.5 miles, trail activity packs can be purchased at Dukes Diner outside Kielder Castle and cost just £4.

This trail is aimed at families with children aged 3-9, but can be enjoyed by all.

Accessibility : The grade is Easy then Moderate. The first half is assisted wheelchair and buggy friendly, second half is moderate with sharp decent and staggered steps.

Length of Time : The trail should keep the young ones entertained for around an hour leaving plenty of time to find more fun and explore the forest.

Moors Valley Zog Trails

Location : Horton Road, Ashley Heath, Nr Ringwood, BH24 2ET

Zog trail at Moors Valley Country Park – This 0.8km trail starts at the Visitors Centre, you can purchase the activity pack for £4, the grade is classed as Easy, recommended age 3-9 years, but can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Accessibility : Trail follows a surfaced path with no steep gradients. Accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Wendover Woods Zog Trail

Location : Upper Icknield Way, Aston Clinton, Aylesbury, HP22 5NQ

Zog trail at Wendover Woods – This 2 km trail starts at the information point , you can purchase the activity pack for £4, the grade is classed as Easy, recommended age 3-9 years, but can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Accessibility : Mostly surfaced with some well compacted woodland paths. Some hilly sections.

Length of Time : The trail should keep the young ones entertained for around an hour leaving plenty of time to find more fun and explore the forest.

Westonbirt Arboretum Zog Trail

Location : Westonbirt, The National Arboretum, Tetbury, GL8 8QS

Zog Trail at Westonbirt Arboretum – This 0.8 mile trail starts at the Old Arboretum. Activity packs are available to purchase from the Westonbirt shop during opening times and cost just £4.

Accessibility : Accessible for wheelchairs. There is a changing place onsite.

Length of Time : The trail should keep the young ones entertained for around an hour leaving plenty of time to find more fun and explore the forest.

What else is at Westonbirt Arboretum : Accessible toilet, Bike lock-up facilities, Changing places facilities, Play Area, Toilets, Assistant dogs welcome, Bird hide, Ranger’s Office, Tramper/Mobility Scooter hire, Baby changing facilities, Cafe, Picnic area, Shop and Visitor Centre.

Opening Hours : Westonbirt is open every day, Monday – Sunday, except Christmas day, from 9am. Last admission is at 4.30pm, 30 minutes before the arboretum closes.

zog trail Whinlatter Forest

Whinlatter Zog Trail

Location : Whinlatter Pass, Keswick, CA12 5TW

Zog trail at Whinlatter Forest – The 1.5 km trail starts at the visitor centre , you can purchase the activity pack for £4, the grade is classed as Easy, recommended age 3-9 years, but can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Accessibility : Surfaced paths. Suitable for pushchairs but be aware there are some hilly sections on the route.

Length of Time : The trail should keep the young ones entertained for around an hour leaving plenty of time to find more fun and explore the forest.

What else is at Whinlatter Forest : 9 walking trails, 3 cycling trails, 2 Running trails – 5k & 10, play areas, Visitor Information & Forest Shop, Go Ape, Segway, Cafe, Bike hire, Tramper/mobility scooter hire, picnic area, cafe.

Opening Hours : Main car park and toilets open 8.30am to 8.30pm. Revelin Moss car park open 24 hours.

Parking : up to 20 mins, no charge, First hour: £2.50, Additional time: £0.50 per 15 minutes, All day maximum charge: £8.

Wyre Forest Zog Trail

Location : Wyre Forest, Callow Hill, Bewdley, DY14 9XQ

Zog trail at Wyre Forest – This trail starts below the play area, first left, look for the flags. Trail activity packs are available to purchase from the Forest Café or the Information Pod and cost just £4, the grade is classed as Easy, recommended age 3-9 years, but can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Accessibility : Suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters and buggys.

Length of Time : The trail should keep the young ones entertained for around an hour leaving plenty of time to find more fun and explore the forest.

What else is at Wyre Forest : 3 walking trails, 1 cycling trail, 5 running trails, Horse trails, Play area, Picnic areas, Bike hire, Café, Go Ape Treetop Challenge, Go Ape Treetop Adventure, Baby and Toddler Forest School Sessions, toilets, cycle hire.

Dogs Allowed : YES

Opening Hours : Open every day (except Christmas Day) from 8am to 9pm.

Wyre Forest is often quieter on weekdays (outside of school holidays), earlier in the morning, and later in the afternoon.
